The Toy
“The gardens of joy are rooted in gratitude”
The Idea
Däs’ path calling to Yoga began 54 years ago following a Ravi Shankar concert in San Fransisco. An artist studying at UC Berkely at the time, he was so inspired by the music he decided to travel to its source. Less than a week later, he was stepping off a plane in Calcutta. For the next decade Däs made pilgrimages throughout Indian and Asia, traveling alongside sadhus, yogis, and holy men. During this time, he continued to create art, offering it as an expression of his practice. In appropriately prophetic fashion, Däs carved a toy for children meant to share the essence of Santosha. 43 years later, this toy continues serves to symbolize his teachings.
The Process
Replicating the original construction process, each toy is still made entirely by hand. Though he is no longer able to carve them himself, Das shares the uniquely meditative process with his longtime student and friend Mark. As such, each piece embodies an experience shaped by gratitude, service, and presence.
The Vision
Our intention with this project is to share that experience through 'Finding Santosha'. Each of 8 poses, prayers, and themes will correspond to the construction of the toy. By the end of the story, the reader(s) will have a symbol of their journey. During the initial fundraising phase of this project however, each patron will receive an exclusive version of the story alongside a toy handmade and blessed by Das and Mark. Only 100 copies and 25 toys will be sold in this format.
